What personal information does Abcam collect and why?
Personal data, or personal information, means any information about an individual that can directly or indirectly identify that individual. It does not include data from which identifying information has been removed (anonymous data).
Abcam does not knowingly collect:

Information that you give to us

Information that we collect automatically

Collecting this information helps us ensure that the website is presented in the most effective manner for you. Information that we obtain from third party sources

You will receive marketing communications from us if you have requested information or purchased products from us, provided us with your details when you contacted our customer service teams, entered a competition, registered for a promotion, or accessed information from our website and, in each case, you have not opted out of receiving marketing communications.

Legal basis for processing personal information
If you are in the EEA, our legal basis for collecting and using the personal information described above will depend on the personal information concerned and the specific context in which we collect it.
However, we will normally only process personal information from you:
- for performance of our contract with you (for example: to process and deliver your order)

Who does Abcam share my personal information with?
We do not, and will not, sell your personal data to a third party.
We will share your data with certain recipients as an essential part of being able to provide you with products and services, to run our events, and to enable us to run our business effectively. Such recipients include:
- trusted third party services providers and partners, for example: those who help us run our business (for example, companies that provide support for our website and internal IT systems); or those who help us get our products to you (for example, a courier company that delivers the products you have ordered or a distributor who operates in a country that we do not sell to directly). - to any other person where you have given your consent to the disclosure.
How does Abcam keep my personal information secure?
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect the personal information that we collect and process about you. The measures we use are designed to provide a level of security appropriate to the risk of processing your personal information. We also have internal data security policies to protect your personal data, and we regularly review how we can maintain these high standards of privacy.
We have put in place procedures to deal with any suspected breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data (personal data breach) and will notify you and any applicable regulator of a breach where we are legally required to do so.

International data transfers
Your personal information may be transferred to our group companies, suppliers or service providers that are based outside the EEA for the purposes described in this Privacy Notice.
If your personal data is transferred, it will continue to be subject to one or more appropriate safeguards, for example:
- the use of the European Commission’s standard model data protection clauses, which require companies to protect personal information they process from the EEA in accordance with all European Union data protection law
- transferred to countries that have been deemed to provide an adequate level of protection for personal data by the European Commission
- where we use providers based in the US, we may transfer data to them if they are part of the Privacy Shield which requires them to provide similar protection to personal data shared between the Europe and the US.
Abcam will not hold your personal information for any longer than is necessary. We retain personal information we collect from you where we have an ongoing legitimate business need to do so (for example, to provide you with a service you have requested or to comply with applicable legal, tax or accounting requirements).
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymise it or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

Withdrawing your consent will not stop processing of your personal information if it is necessary for performing a contract with you, or if such processing is in Abcam’s legitimate interests.

We respond to all requests we receive from individuals wishing to exercise their data protection rights in accordance with applicable data protection laws. However, we may charge a reasonable fee or we may refuse to comply with your request if it is clearly unfounded, repetitive or excessive.
